Kathak Rangmanch

About the Dancer

Jia in a seated Kathak pose, arms framed overhead, her lehenga spread in a full circle

Jia has been learning Kathak under Smt. Hiral Joshi since the age of 5. She has recently earned her Visharad in Kathak (Bachelor’s in Fine Arts) through the Hindustan Art and Music Society in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She has performed at various events, representing DDA in OC shows and cultural events featuring international audiences.

Jia enjoys layakari in Kathak, exploring the mathematical intricacies of taal through complex tatkar, todas, tukdas, and chakraddar tihais, constantly challenging herself with increasingly complex rhythmic patterns and speed.

This fall, Jia will be attending the University of California, Irvine to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Data Science, alongside a Master’s in Kathak under Smt. Hiral Joshi through Hindustan Art and Music Society.

She hopes to continue delving into her interests in robotics, motorsport, and tennis in college. She is grateful to her guru, family, and friends for supporting her thus far in her journey.
